They’re Going to Kill the White House

Osama bin Laden likes to do things in multiples and simultaneously. He will probably kill Washington, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles all at the same time. Here is a description of the killing of one of them, from the new book, Treachery, by Bill Gertz:
“The huge Saudi Arabian container ship arrived at the Red Hook Container Terminal in Brooklyn on a clear fall day. From the outside the ship looked the same as hundreds of other ships that docked at the terminal from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. But the Saudi vessel was carrying a special cargo - one chosen with great care by Osama bin Laden, a Saudi national and the leader of the al-Qaeda terrorist group that years before had attacked the World Trade Center, killing three thousand innocent men, women, and children. Hidden inside one of the ship’s scores of blue metal shipping containers was a nuclear bomb. After years of trying, al-Qaeda had succeeded in the task of putting together a nuclear device, with the help of Pakistani scientists, black market equipment purchases, and finally, a quantity of plutonium purchased from Russian organized crime figures. At the appointed hour, a blinding white flash signaled the detonation, followed by the explosion equal to the blast made by 10,000 tons of TNT. The shock waves spread in a large circle from the Brooklyn terminal, leveling almost everything in its path - from the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, to the buildings in the far north of Manhattan, to Kennedy Airport in Queens. The mushroom cloud could be seen as far away as Montauk Point, on the far tip of Long Island. Huge flames consumed everything that was left standing by the initial blast. The death toll from the immediate blast was staggering - at least 5 million people died instantly. Millions more died a slow, agonizing death from radiation sickness in the coming days.”
The above scenario is fictional, but it is realistic. The truth is that terrorists are working on obtaining, and may already have, nuclear weapons of such destructive power that one detonation in a major American city would bring about world-wide chaos. The danger is real, and growing.
Between the programs of Homeland Security, the Proliferation Security Initiative, and the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, a great deal is being done to protect America from its enemies. In this article we argue that an important new element needs to be added. The only alternative to the destruction of the United States, which, with a number of nuclear devices is possible, is to find a way to include organizations like al Qaeda, terrorists without a country, into the framework of Mutually Assured Destruction, or MAD, the arrangement by which we kept the peace with Communist Russia for forty years. We believe we were the first to revive this idea for our time, in an article on August 17, 2003, “The Horror at the Heart of Islam,” and we have continued to work on a plan in additional articles up to the present time. Osama bin Laden in his “Declaration of War” on February 23, 1998, wrote, “We, with God’s help, call on every Muslim who believes in God and wishes to be rewarded to comply with God’s order to kill the Americans and plunder their money...divide their nation, tear them to shreds, destroy their economy, burn their companies, ruin their welfare, sink their ships, and kill them on land, sea, and air.”
Why America?
“America is the reason for all oppression, injustice, licentiousness, or suppression that is the Muslim’s lot. It stands behind all the disasters that were caused and are still being caused to the Muslims, it is immersed in the blood of Muslims and cannot hide this. We have the right to kill four million Americans - two million of them children.” – Osama bin Laden
These people need to be straightened out immediately. Under these circumstances, no plan to stop them can be considered “too radical.”
How real is the threat of nuclear destruction by Al Qaeda? Very real. World-wide intelligence agencies are warning that if they get a nuclear device, they will use it. The nation got a fairly complete introduction to the problem last Sunday in the CNN program, “Nuclear Terror.” The program was based on a new book, Nuclear Terrorism, by Graham Allison of Harvard. No one seeing the program could have missed, however, the pessimism repeatedly stated by the experts. “It will happen.” This is realistic. With all of our efforts, we will stop some, but sooner or later we will miss that one individual walking into a city with a bomb in a suitcase.
True, the CNN program ended with the statement that this was “preventable.” That was misleading. It is based on the last third of the Allison book where he argues that, “All we have to do is prevent terrorists from acquiring highly enriched uranium or weapons-grade plutonium. No fissile material means no nuclear explosion means no nuclear terrorism. It is that simple.”
Unless - they already have the material, which is floating around all over the world, or already have the bomb, which has been argued by any number of experts.
On this subject of whether bin Laden has in his possession already built nuclear weapons, as opposed to just nuclear material, these are the most repeated accounts. All are in the public domain. We know no secrets. All appear in news articles or in the latest books out on terrorism. Many appear in the book, Osama’s Revenge: the next 9/11, by Paul Williams, where he provides documentation. Allison however, claims of these reports, “…their accuracy remains a matter of conjecture.” But he does say on page 10, “There can be no doubt about the fact that enough nuclear material to build more than twenty nuclear weapons was lost in the transition from the Soviet Union to Russia.” Whether that material is in the hands of al Qaeda, we do not know.
We begin with the most repeated account of already built nuclear weapons, the testimony of General Aleksandr Lebed of Russia to Congress in 1998 that 40 suitcase nuclear bombs [special atomic demolition munitions (SADMs), similar to our backpack- size nuclear weapons like the Army’s RA-155[ had disappeared from the Russian nuclear arsenal and could be in the hands of Muslim extremists. Russian leaders denied this, but the testimony was later collaborated by aides to President Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Denisov and Alexei Yablokov.
A 10-kiloton bomb of this type going off in the center of a major metropolitan area is capable of killing a hundred thousand or more civilians while exposing millions of others to lethal gamma rays.
On January 7, 1998, Shaykh Hisham Kabbani, chairman of the Islam Supreme Council of America, testified before a committee of the U.S. Department of State that more than twenty suitcase nuclear bombs had arrived in the U.S. and that more that 5000 suicide bombers have been trained for the next attack. His statement, according to Williams, was supported by Pakistani and Israeli intelligence. In the same address, Kabbani said that 80% of the mosques in America have been taken over by Muslim extremists who are committed to the destruction of the United States, share the views of Islamic militant groups such as al Qaeda, and are hostile to American culture, wanting to replace it with an Islamic order. He restated these claims to members of the press in the wake of 9/11.
On Sept. 1, 2001, China’s intelligence service, in one of its rare cases of sharing information with the United States, supplied the CIA with information indicating that al Qaeda had already obtained some type of nuclear device. The report was not confirmed, however, by the CIA.
On September 14, 2001, Israeli security arrested an al Qaeda operative as he attempted to enter Israel through Palestine territories at a border checkpoint at Ramallah. He was carrying a radioactive backpack bomb, a sophisticated weapon using plutonium that could have wreaked havoc throughout Israel. According to Williams, news of the nuke was conveyed to the State Department and the weapon became listed on in the CIA Daily Threat Report.
On Oct. 11, 2001, George Tenent, Director of the CIA, met with President Bush to tell him at least two nuclear suitcases had reached al Qaeda operatives in the United States. According to Williams, the news was supported by Pakistani’s ISI, the CIA, and the FBI.
In November 2001, bin Laden told Hamid Mir, editor of Dawn, a Pakistani newspaper, who appeared in the CNN program, “We have chemical and nuclear weapons. They are not difficult to obtain if you have contacts in Russia with other Islamist groups. They are available for $10 million and $20 million.”
On November 25, 2001, Taliban leader Omar assured BBC reporters that the nuclear destruction of the United states was well underway. “The plan is going ahead, and God willing, it is being implemented. But it is a huge undertaking, which is beyond the will and comprehension of human beings. If God’s will is with us, this will happen within a short period of time.”
November 16, 2003. Associated Press: “Al-Qassl’a, an Islamist Internet forum, today posted an interview allegedly with Aba Salma Al-Hijazi, an al-Qaeda commander closest to Osama bin-Laden. Surrounded by five masked men carrying missiles he said, ‘a huge and very courageous strike’ will take place…and that the number of ‘infidels’ expected to be killed in the attack exceeds 100,000. He stated that the attacks will be carried out in a way that will ‘amaze the world’ and turn al-Qaeda into an organization that ‘horrifies the world until the law of Allah (Sharia) is implemented.’ He said Americans would be the main target, in order to cause ‘disintegration and collapse.’”
On February 8, 2004, the London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat reported bin laden has vowed to launch a “back-breaking attack” on the United States by February, confirming an earlier message by the militant group network, “The attack will change the order of things. Americans should prepare their coffins, hospitals, and graves.”
November 15, 2004, “Nuke Attack Surely Coming,” Newsmax.com: “Former CIA agent Michael Scheuer told CBS 60 Minute’ that he is convinced that the international outlaw bin Laden will attack the U.S. homeland with some sort of nuclear weapon of mass destruction. Scheuer is the author of the recent book on terrorism, Through Our Enemies’ Eyes.”
As suggested by Allison, we do not know what is true here and what is not. What we do know is that getting a nuclear bomb to the U.S. would not be a problem, and getting it into a major city would not be a problem. That part was made clear enough in the CNN program and no intelligence agency in the world would argue against this. So the bottom line is: If they have it, they will use it. In spite of all our efforts, we remain vulnerable, which means we need an additional plan.
The first responsibility of any government is the survival of the country.
If we cannot attack the terrorists because they have no country, leaving us helpless, and them immune, then to stop them we must attack the nations who harbor them and often aid them. The Bush doctrine comes into play here. “Whoever aids terrorists is a terrorist nation.” This will provide the necessary two parts for a strategy of Mutually Assured Destruction—our lands, their lands. We can attack using nuclear or conventional forces. Massive bombing raids on known and suspected terrorist areas in all Muslim lands, using our most powerful conventional bombs would be our choice. Once the world and especially all terrorist groups understand that we will not accept the destruction of a single American city, then it absolutely follows that we are going to have to threaten to destroy by air one or more Muslim countries, or parts of countries, to provide us with leverage in a strategy of mutually assured destruction. The problem, of course, is that some of these Muslim nations provide the oil that fuels our highly industrial nation. This will require careful selectivity in working out such a plan. But collectively, the bombing should be the equivalent of a catastrophic nuclear attack on the Muslim world.
Whatever the means, what we are calling for is for our government to work out, and announce to the world, a plan of retaliation that will insure that none of the goals of al Qaeda can be achieved without mutually assured destruction that will be blamed on them, and that this will remain in place over the years until international forces complete the destruction of all terrorist cells. If we have to live in fear, then they will have to live in fear. If we are destroyed, they will be destroyed.
Islam, the religion itself, is in the final analysis the real source of this murderous attack on Western and other parts of the world. Wrote the Middle East scholar Shmuel Bar recently, “It cannot be ignored that the lion’s share of terrorist acts and the most devastating of them in recent years have been perpetrated in the name of Islam.” The scriptures that permit this are right there in the Koran, which is why the Muslim world, in an unparalleled moral failure, did not unambiguously and universally condemn the 9/11 attack on America. Islam is not a religion of peace. It is a religion of war. It has no equivalent to “love your enemies.” And non-Muslim religions have no equivalent to “kill the unbelievers.” The terrorists are not “extremists.” The are the true Muslims they claim to be because they adhere strictly to the letter of the Koran, and the rest of the Muslim world admires them for this and what they do and increasingly they are expanding and shoving aside the moderates. Bin Laden has simply revived in our time the violence and militarism that has been at the heart of Islam for 1400 years.
Said bin Laden in his “Letter to America”: “What do we want of you? First, we are calling you to Islam, the religion of the unification of God, of freedom from associating partners with Him (a reference to the Trinity, a big heresy with Muslims), of complete submission to His laws (the Sharia, that legalistic horror seen in the Taliban) and of the discarding of all the opinions of orders, theories, and religions that contradict this religion.( The total intolerance of all other religions that has always characterized Islam.)
In 2003, the Defense Department produced a report arguing that the extremists of al Qaeda and other Islamist terrorist groups had adopted a religious doctrine to support almost any kind of killing in what they perceive as the defense of Islam. According to the Pentagon report, “The ideological fervor justifies suicide bombings and war all in the name of jihad, or holy war.” The suicide bomber believes, as the Defense Department report put it, that he will secure, “salvation and the pleasures of paradise,” and will “find favor with God as a result of his actions.” The Pentagon has it right, while the media and the university are still fumbling around looking for “root causes.”
Listen to Hassein Massawi, the former leader of Hezbollah: “We are not fighting you so that you will offer us something. We are fighting to eliminate you.” When Al Qaeda killed 11 French submariners in Karachi and then attacked the French oil tanker off the coast of Yemen, a spokesman for the terrorists said, “We would have preferred to hit a U.S. frigate, but no problem, they are all infidels.” That’s the “root cause.” Infidels.
Selling the nation out to political correctness and multiculturalism, American academics have tried to hide from us what this Jihad really means. Let the Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran, the father of the Islamic revolution and godfather of terrorism, explain it to you. He is quoting directly from the Koran in what is practically a dictionary definition of Jihad:
“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males to prepare themselves for the conquest of other countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world. Those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world. Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those who say this are witless. Islam says: Kill the unbelievers... Islam says kill the non-Muslims, put them to the sword and scatter their armies. There are hundreds of other Koranic psalms and hadiths, sayings of the Prophet, urging Muslims to value war and to fight. So does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit on those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

When U.S. and other Western leaders and intellectuals fail to discuss this religious dimension, they mislead their publics. “This war is fundamentally religious,” said bin Laden in November of 2001. “Under no circumstances should we forget this enmity between us and the infidels. The enmity is based on creed.”
It is this fact that unites bin Laden with the entire Muslim world, making it in turn a legitimate target. This is not just a clash of civilizations. It is best understood as a clash of interpretations of reality. The West is trained in objectivity and reason. We can see the situation clearly. The incessant and exclusive teaching of nothing but the Koran in Muslim countries has bred over the centuries a totally conspiratorial view of reality, one hopelessly incapable of seeing one’s own faults, and completely misunderstanding of the intentions and nature of the West. All of the past horror, and all of the coming horror, is based upon nothing but a total inability to think logically, to see things accurately, on the part of the Muslim world. The excuses of bin Laden for his attack on America, have no foundation whatsoever. They are a tissue of lies. He claims, for example, that 9/11 was a “defensive” jihad to oppose our “aggression.” That is gibberish, reality turned upside down.
As Ralph Peters, retired Army officer and author of Beyond Terror says, “In the Arab world myth, comforting lies, and cynical rumors trump facts that seem undeniable to us. The people of Iraq and their neighbors never acquired the mental skills necessary to separate appealing delusions from concrete reality. They think we plan to convert them to Christianity or Judaism, or scheme to corrupt their women, or violate their holy shrines or steal their oil.”
A 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Baghdad writes, “Most people here have wildly irrational beliefs about the world. They believe Sharon pressured Bush to go to war against Iraq, or that the CIA put Saddam Hussein, a CIA agent, in power to allow the U.S. to take the oil, or that Mossad controls the CIA and Jews run Washington. These beliefs are the product of years of brainwashing by their educational system, political and religious leaders. These beliefs turn educated, highly intelligent Muslim family men into hijackers that slam passenger planes into buildings and suicide bombers that murder Jews on Israeli buses. We are at war against an ideology, a dangerous mental disease that slowly but deliberately is plunging the world into World War III. Arab nations promote, finance, or condone terrorist activity and organizations. “
The vast majority in the Muslim world still think Mossad, Jewish Intelligence, was behind 9/11, and all have copies of The Protocols of Zion, a totally fictitious Russian fantasy about Jewish desire to control the world. The hatred for Jews in Muslim lands is without doubt the greatest mental pathology in the history of mankind, sickening in its totally dishonest, unjustified nature. A pathology that is certain, in the end, to result in the destruction of the Muslim world. Wrote one student of the Muslim world on FrontPageMag.com recently, “Burrowed deep within the Muslim-Arab [worldview] lurks a sense of grandiosity that holds the rest of the world in contempt.” If only they knew how the rest of the world views them, with their beheadings, their suicide bombers, their “honor” killings, their treachery. Tribalism, hatred for women, and religious obscurantism have created a historic cul-de-sac for millions of people who now love death more than life.

In view of a collective insanity such as this, a mental illness that has overcome a large portion of the planet due to a religion that has betrayed them as human beings, you deal with it the way you deal with raging paranoia in a mental hospital. You back away from it, but you keep it in a steel cage, and the threat of massive retaliation if the disease gets out of control. There is no alternative. The Muslim world has in a sense become insane and must be treated as such.
Benjamin Netanyahu, former prime minister of Israel, wrote in Fighting Terrorism: “We must declare terrorism a crime against humanity, consider the terrorists enemies of mankind, to be given no quarter and no consideration for their purported grievances. The Allies did not look for the ‘root cause’ of Nazism because they knew that some acts are evil in and of themselves, and do not deserve any consideration or ‘understanding.’ Nothing justified Nazism. Nothing justifies terrorism. These regimes, like all other terrorists states, must be given a forthright demand: Stop terrorism or face destruction. This is the great mission that now stands before the free world. That the world is standing in front of an abyss seems to be only barely understood.”
A second voice was added recently to our efforts to get the government to implement a plan of deterrence to stop terrorism with the publication of America’s Answer, by J. Patrick Griffin, Jr.. He outlines a second but more radical plan than ours. From the Griffin book: “How can we feel good at the thought of allowing this problem to continue for the next fifty years or more? Our lifetimes and the lifetimes of our children and grandchildren would be punctuated by horrific terrorist assaults and nightly news programs dominated by blood, mayhem and horror. My proposal for an immediate, viable, and effective deterrent to such a potential attack can be stated quite simply. A nuclear attack by Islamic terrorists against America would forfeit the existence of what is most sacred to the Islamic terrorists, Mecca, by nuclear attack, and the destruction by conventional means by the Israelis of the Al Aqsa Mosque, this in connection with invasion of the oil fields. The militants are currently viewed by hundreds of millions of Muslims as the heroes of Islam, but we have the capacity to create events that would show them to be, in fact, an extreme threat to Islam.”
It is important to understand that any such plan is conditional in nature. That is, they are of the nature “if you do that, we will do this.” Under this rule, nothing really need happen. But if they do destroy one or more of our cities, they will have been told we will retaliate with catastrophic force. This is to insure that the terrorists understand that any attack on America or other members of a coalition will drastically reduce the territory and influence of Islam, not enlarge it. This would make martyrdom look more like suicide.
America is a super power--THE super power. We must use that power to end this threat to the world now, or live with it for decades to come during which time there will be successes by the terrorists. They will get through on occasion and destroy our cities one by one. After their first success, the loss of our first city to a nuclear device, there will be a terrible outcry for retaliation. Why not put this threat in place now, in hopes of averting even that one?
