THE ENEMY WE FACE - AND THE DANGER WITHIN, KERRY
By Leonard Magruder
April 26, 2004
Richard Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said today in Lawrence, Kansas, “Terrorism is the greatest threat the United States has confronted.” Speaking to the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, he said, “This threat of global terrorism is a greater threat to our survival as a free and democratic nation than we have ever faced.”
“We are a nation at war. What is at stake is our way of life,” said the native of Kansas and a four-star general, the Bush administration’s top military adviser.
Said Leonard Magruder, President of Vietnam Veterans for Academic Reform, which is headquartered in Lawrence along with the University of Kansas where the organization has an auxiliary unit, “I assume all Americans understand by now that what the General says is true, even though it doesn’t seem like we are in such danger. For those who don’t understand, Cal Thomas recently laid it out in one of his nationally syndicated columns:
“Imagine this. A tape is sent to Al-Jazeera from Osama bin Laden. He claims he has nuclear suitcase bombs in major American cities and in London, Paris, and Berlin. He demands that the United States withdraw support for Israel and Saudi Arabia and pledge not to intervene as he leads a war against Jerusalem and Riyadh. If we try to stop him he threatens to detonate the bombs, killing millions.”
Thomas goes on:
“The free world cannot afford to wait until that day. It must immediately take an aggressive, unforgiving, and effective stance that will neutralize terrorists wherever they are hiding and working to destroy us, our economy, our freedoms, and our way of life. There will be no time for appeals to the United Nations or negotiations with people who think they are going to heaven. There is no time for seminars at which academics and other remainders from the 60’s ponder the question, ‘Why do they hate us?’ We shouldn’t care. The question should be, ‘How quickly can we eliminate them before they come after us again?’ They cannot be placated or converted, and the longer we pretend they can, the more bombings and death we will see.”
The response of President Bush to 9/11, a doctrine of preemption and unilateralism, was the only possible, only logical, response. Kerry’s recent statement that as president he would do away with this doctine and turn to the United Nations or negotiations is insanity. The United States would be in the iron grip of nuclear blackmail five minutes after the inauguration.
But to the recent question raised by Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, “Is it enough?” the answer to that is “no.” Tracking down terrorists and eliminating them one-by-one is not enough. The task will be endless, and while some are being captured, others will always be free to destroy. What is needed is some plan to stop them all in their tracks, now. We have made suggestions on two occasions in articles and on radio shows, in one case international radio, as to what needs to be added to the Bush Doctrine. We quote from press releases on these suggestions simply to show that we have been able to get this issue to the public to some degree, but the issue needs much more, and immediate, national attention:

MAGRUDER ON INTERNATIONAL RADIO PROPOSES INVASIONS, DESTRUCTION OF MECCA IF TERRORISTS STRIKE AGAIN
(Other interviews include WDEV, Vermont; WRUF, Gainsville, Florida; United Press International, Washington, D.C.; WFNC, North Carolina; and a number of radio and TV stations in the local area, Topeka, Lawrence, and Kansas City, Kansas.)
Leonard Magruder, President of Vietnam Veterans for Academic Reform, was interviewed last night on the half-hour Geoff Metcalf syndicated national radio talk show reaching not only the United States but Europe and Australia. Recent guests have included Pat Buchanan, Bernard Goldberg, David Horowitz, Bill O’Reilly, and John Stossel.
Mr. Magruder, whose new web site, www.v-v-a-r.org., has received thousands of hits per day, and whose articles are being reproduced on sites such as NewsMax.com and WinterSoldier.com, quoted from an earlier statement about the need to add a mutually assured destruction plan to the Bush Doctrine:
“As great a job as is being done by our various agencies in tracking down and eliminating threats by terrrorists, capturing and jailing them, America’s war on terrorism has one vulnerability which must be eliminated. Al-Qaeda alone has some 70,000 trained terrorists in 60 nations around the world, each nation containing a number of cells of terrorists. They are largely autonomous. They do not have to wait for word from bin Laden; they can strike on their own when ready.
“The element that must be added to the Bush Doctrine is one based on the conditional idea, ‘If you do that, we will do this.’ It is a variation on the policy we had during the Cold War--mutually assured destruction, or MAD. That is, ‘If you attack Washington, D.C., our armies in Iraq will invade Syria, Iran, or Saudi Arabia, or all three. We will let you worry about that.’
“The idea is that terrorists strike in the name of expanding the territory of Islam to the glory of Allah, converting or executing infidels. If they know that we will strike back and take half of Islamic territory, then they have no mission, no service to Allah. It must not be forgotton for a second that this whole terrorist movement has its roots in religion, not, as naive academics try to tell us, in ‘social injustice.’
“And there is one other part to this plan, one that will make us uncomfortable, even frightened, but it is the real key to stopping the Islamist jihad threatening the free, civilized world. At the same moment of ordering invasions we will destroy Mecca with a nuclear bomb. This idea is proposed in a new and widely advertised book America’s Answer, by J.Patrick Griffin Jr. He calls this ‘striking at the psychological generative core of the terrorist movement.’ Doing what they never imagined in their worst moment that we would do. He compares it to the impact of the destruction of Hiroshima, which ended the war with Japan by destroying the myth that Hirohito was a God who would bring Japan inevitable victory. Nobody, not even bin Laden, thought the Twin Towers would fall. Everyone assumed the buildings would be badly damaged, but not fall. When they did, this was taken by bin Laden as unquestionable proof that Allah was going to deliver America into his hands. Striking at Mecca will end that delusion. We are a super power--THE super power. We must use that power to end this threat to the world now, or live with it for decades to come during which time there will be successes by the terrorists. They will get through on occasion and destroy our cities one by one. After their first success, the loss of our first city to a nuclear device, there will be a terrible outcry for retaliation. Why not put this threat in place now, in hopes of averting even that one? And note that nothing need happen, as long as the terrorists do not strike at us. This is not a preemptive plan, it is a conditional plan, a warning against striking at us. It is based on the Bush warning that the U.S. will use nuclear weapons, and his announcement that a nation that harbors or aids terrorists is a terrorist nation.
“In his annual national security assessment to the Senate Armed Services Committee, George Tenet said, ‘Attacks have been prevented that otherwise would have taken place. The main enemy remains the U.S. We have time and agains uncovered plots that are chilling. A spectacular attack against the U.S. remains the top goal and acquiring a chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons remains a “religious obligation” in the eyes of Osama bin Laden.’
“Why a ‘religious obligation’? Again, all this has nothing to do with ‘root causes’ or ‘social injustices.’ That is befuddled academic thinking. This is a religious phenomenon. It all flows from scriptures in the Koran. Tenet refers to plots uncovered that are ‘chilling.’ He does not elaborate. But we can assume from what he says that the danger is very close, and very deadly.
“What is it in Islam that produces people who can engage in such horrific acts of terror and violence? Those Muslims who do engage in acts of terrorism do have religious justification for their actions based on the teachings of the Koran, the holy book of Islam, and based on examples from the prophet of Islam, Muhammad.
“When Christians engage in such violence they have betrayed the teachings of Jesus, but when Muslims engage in violence, murder, and other acts of terrorism they can legitimately claim that they are following the commands of Allah as found in the Koran and in the examples of Muhammad and his teachings. Osama bin Laden can quote any number of scriptures from the Koran to justify his actions and it is incorrect to label him a ‘fundamentalist’ in our Western sense. He can claim, with justification, to be a pure Muslim, doing what more timid Muslims, the ‘moderates,’ should be doing:
Sura 2: 190-192, ‘Fight in the cause of Allah who fight you...and slay them wherever you catch them.’
Sura 3:195, ‘Those who have fought for or been slain verily I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens of with rivers flowing beneath.’
Sura: 4:101, ‘For the unbelievers are unto you open enemies.’
Sura: 9:5, ‘Fight and slay the unbelievers wherever you find them.’
“Some of the violence commanded in the Koran is particularly gruesome:
Sura:5:33, ‘crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides. Smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them.’
“With unbelievable arrogance, Islam views as ‘oppressive’ any country that does not allow Muslims to come in and set up Islam as a religion of the state, enforced by the “Sharia,” that horror of Islamic law we saw practiced by the Taliban. They think they are going to impose this on the whole world, and more and more Muslims are joining in this movement as we move towards war between civilizations. It is a threat to the world even more great than the Nazi threat. Islam divides the world into two parts, the House of Islam--the Muslim world, and the House of War--the rest of the planet. We are in the House of War, and it is perpetual until the whole world is converted through jihad or violence. And there can be no negotiation. Kerry is dangerously naive on this point.
“We will offer no chance for America to come to an agreement with the righteous warriors, no possibility for compromise, no hope for a treaty, no attempt for solution. The war will be waged until the United States remains a memory.”
PRESS RELEASE:
MAGRUDER TELLS UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA STUDENTS SOME VERSION OF MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION (MAD) NECESSARY TO PREVENT LOSS OF AMERICAN CITIES.
Leonard Magruder, President of Vietnam Veterans for Academic Reform, the student auxiliary at the University of Kansas, in a radio interview on WRUF, Gainsville, told students at the University of Florida today:
“This is unquestionably the most important crisis the nation has ever faced. We need to set up something along the lines we had during the Cold War with Russia of mutually assured destruction, based on invasions, and possibly nuclear strikes. We need to be able to threaten something the terrorists care deeply about and tell them, for example, if you strike an American city, from our base in Iraq we will invade and then democratize, say, Syria, Iran, and/or Saudi Arabia. This will mean, of course, our troops staying in Iraq indefinitely. From the very beginning after 9/11, President Bush warned that those nations that harbor terrorists are potentially at risk.
“The terrorists think they are safe because they have no country. But we know that they do come from countries, ones that harbor and support them. And we know their goal is the expansion of Islam and Muslim territory and that they would not like to see that territory diminished, much less at the hands of Americans. The terrorists need to be told that if they attack us, if we lose an American city, there will be massive retaliation, one reason being to deter them from striking again. Our current situation is unacceptable. We are totally vulnerable. A terrorist-by-terrorist approach cannot work. We must get the nation and the government working on a plan for deterrence. Once it is understood that the American people will not accept the loss of a single city, or any other form of mass destruction, such a national policy must inevitably follow.
“Benjamin Netanyahu, former prime minister of Israel, said in a recent article, ‘Most Americans understand that had Al Qaeda possessed an atomic device last September, the city of New York would not exist today. They realize that last week we could have grieved not for thousands of dead, but for millions. It appears that people will have to once again see the unimaginable materialize in front of their eyes before they are willing to do what must be done.‘
“We must do what must be done, before that materializes. The fate of Islam, its Koran containing the words, ‘Kill the unbelievers where you find him’(Sura 2:256), is not our problem. The civilized world must quarantine this lethal disease now. A four- star general has told us that this is the greatest threat we have ever faced, in our entire history. Our veterans, in particular our Vietnam veterans, know that, and that is why our V.V.A.R. polls show them at least 90% against Kerry as Commander-in-Chief (see our article “Media Cover-Up”). What Vietnam veterans are saying, in poll after poll, is that Kerry would be very weak on national security, compared to President Bush. This is something Americans needs to know, as veterans are the ones who would know most about national security. But our media is keeping it from them, campaigning for Kerry. This is how liberal philosophy--and Kerry is rated the worst liberal in Congress--ends up destroying a nation. Just as it destroyed South Vietnam.”
